Most faculty, staff, and students will find their needs will be easily met by this year's "standard desktop," which is designed to provide sufficient performance for at least 4 years.
To determine the approximate age of an existing Dell computer, see our Dell model years page. Each new desktop includes a choice of monitor sizes. See the monitors resolution comparison. Laptops are not used as one's primary computer. Please read about the benefits of using an ECN-Domain computer. This model does NOT support Windows 8 or older. The optical drive is no longer included by default.
Additional upgrades include a 1TB m. We'll confirm the order details and ask you to provide the Purdue account number to be charged working as needed with your business office.
ECN will also handle placing the order. Other brands: ECN's preference for specific desktop brands and models e. Purdue has an arrangement with Dell, for example, which provides for expedited acquisition of Dell OptiPlex and Precision replacement parts as well as on-site service by a Dell technician when necessary.
Unlike most other brands whose service centers are at least 60 miles away, Dell's service technicians for business customers in this region are based in Frankfort, Indiana, and they visit West Lafayette to provide on-site service on a daily basis.
Arranging for service for other brands e. Acer, Sony will likely be very time-consuming and inconvenient at best. If you opt to purchase an alternate brand or model, please note that the procurement process requires that you provide justification for your selections. Historically, Dell changed models every months. When purchased on the same order as a new computer, each Dell UltraSharp or Professional monitor includes the same warranty coverage as the computer itself -- which, as of Aprilis typically 5 years. Both of these form factors have been scaled down from the previous models.
For our review we will be looking at the SFF. The front of the computer is predominately taken up by ventilation. In the upper right hand corner, there is the Dell branding, four USB ports 2 x 2. One side of the computer has rubber feet so users can, as stated above, turn the device on its side. The rear of the computer is a quasi-reflection of the front, with the same amount of real estate taken up by ventilation. Near the bottom of the computer is a DVI-I dual link port next to another DisplayPort, with the power port beneath them.
The OptiPlex has been designed for easy maintenence, with a tool-less enclosure that can be popped open at the flip of a retension clip.
IT admins can easily get inside of the unit if something needs to be repaired, replaced, or upgraded. We will be testing the OptiPlex alongside the Dell Precision We are sure that the T will out perform the OptiPlex, but we are not running the comparison in an effort to state one is better than the other. Though the T will have better performance, it does show users the type of performance they can expect from this SFF desktop model.
The first benchmark is SPECviewperf 12, the worldwide standard for measuring graphics performance based on professional applications. SPECviewperf runs 8 benchmarks it calls viewsets, all of which represent graphics content and behavior from actual applications. The does have better graphics capabilities across the board. That being said, the results pretty much are on par with similarly built computers.
We are going to list the broad-category results for each, as opposed to the individual workloads. The results are an average of all the individual workloads in each category.
Again, the results reflected the difference in the two machines. The script automatically loops the bookmarks three times to account for caching memory and disk cache. In our last benchmark, we will leverage PCMark, a tool that calculates the performance at the system and component level—and most often represents typical home user workloads for all types of PCs, including tablets, mobile workstations, and desktops.
While there are multiple categories that PCMark tests including typical work usage, home usage, and creative usagewe will only be looking at Storage and Home Conventional benchmarks. The Storage PCMark tests the performance of any drives installed in the system. This table shows the approximate calendar year during which select Dell computer models were originally released.

The first generation of the XPS system was available as either a desktop or a tower case. For the next three years, with Vernon Weiss and Brian Zucker continuing to evolve the product line, the XPS systems won over magazine reviews and covers, being the first to adopt the latest PC technology available and bring it to the consumers at an attractive price.
From toas Dell grew into a large corporation, the XPS line lost its position as the leading-edge performance machines and became essentially just a line for fast computers. Consumer notebooks were also separated into two lines: Inspiron and XPS. While the XPS designation used to mean the hardware was high-end and well suited for gaming, that is no longer the case. For example, the XPS is limited to extremely low-end video cards, while the XPS M is only configurable with Intel video, thus making both systems unsuited for gaming or high-end usage.
